How to choose the right trunnion mounted ball valve design.

Trunnion mounted ball valves support the ball on fixed trunnions so seat movement provides the primary sealing action. They are widely used for larger sizes, higher pressure classes and pipeline isolation.

Selection is mainly driven by body construction, pressure class, maintenance access, temperature and media severity.

01 · Product Type

Side Entry Trunnion Ball Valve

A side-entry trunnion ball valve is the standard pipeline configuration for many API 6D applications. The body is assembled from the side and can be supplied in 2-piece or 3-piece construction, full or reduced bore, with SPE or DPE seats and RF, RTJ or butt-weld ends.

Best suited for: Pipeline transmission and high-pressure isolation where conventional body access and broad size/class coverage are required.

When to choose it

Choose side entry when broad pipeline applicability and conventional workshop maintenance are more important than in-line top access.

02 · Product Type

Forged Trunnion Ball Valve

A forged trunnion ball valve uses forged body components such as A105N, LF2 or stainless/duplex forgings depending on the service. Forged construction is frequently specified for Class 900, Class 1500 and Class 2500 duties, RTJ or butt-weld piping and projects that place tight controls on material integrity and traceability.

Best suited for: Higher-pressure and high-integrity projects where forged pressure-containing parts are specified by the project or piping class.

When to choose it

Choose forged construction when the material specification or pressure class requires forged pressure-containing parts rather than cast bodies.

03 · Product Type

Metal Seated Trunnion Ball Valve

A metal seated trunnion ball valve replaces the primary soft seat interface with hard-faced metal seating surfaces. Ball and seat coatings or overlays are selected around temperature, solids content, erosion risk and leakage requirement. Actuator torque and thermal effects require more attention than on a soft-seated valve.

Best suited for: High-temperature, abrasive or erosive service where soft seats cannot provide reliable life or temperature capability.

When to choose it

Choose metal seating when temperature, erosion or solids make PTFE, nylon or similar soft seats unsuitable.
