Floating Ball Valves

Floating Ball Valves are available in several body and end-connection configurations for process, utility and industrial isolation. Compare the designs below by maintenance access, piping connection and pressure-temperature duty.

Selection Guide

How to choose the right floating ball valve design.

Floating ball valves use line pressure to load the ball against the downstream seat, making them a compact choice for process isolation, utility lines and many industrial shutoff duties.

Selection is mainly driven by body construction, maintenance access, end connection and pressure-temperature duty rather than the floating principle itself.

Floating Ball Valve Configurations

Choose by body construction, end connection, pressure-temperature duty and maintenance requirements.

01 · Product Type

2-Piece Floating Ball Valve

A 2-piece floating ball valve uses a body-and-end-piece construction that keeps the valve compact while allowing a wide range of end connections and materials. It is commonly considered for process, utility and terminal service when line size and pressure remain within the practical range of a floating-seat design.

Best suited for: General process isolation where a compact body and straightforward flanged or threaded installation are preferred.

When to choose it

Choose this design when compact construction matters more than full body disassembly for maintenance.

02 · Product Type

3-Piece Floating Ball Valve

A 3-piece floating ball valve separates the center body from two end pieces. This construction can simplify maintenance and makes socket-weld, butt-weld and threaded configurations practical for smaller process lines. It is often selected where piping layout or maintenance practice favors a removable center section.

Best suited for: Process systems that benefit from easier body removal, welded ends or repeated maintenance access.

Choose this design when maintenance access and welded or threaded end options are a priority.

03 · Product Type

Flanged Floating Ball Valve

A flanged floating ball valve combines a floating ball-and-seat arrangement with RF or other specified flange ends. It is widely used in process and utility piping because it can be removed from the line without cutting the pipe and can be matched to the project flange standard and pressure class.

Best suited for: ASME flanged process piping where bolted removal and standard flange connections are required.

Choose this design when standard flanged installation and easy line removal are more important than welded-end integrity.

FAQ

Floating Ball Valves Selection FAQ

How do I choose between the floating ball valves shown on this page?

Start with the application and maintenance strategy. Selection is mainly driven by body construction, maintenance access, end connection and pressure-temperature duty rather than the floating principle itself. Then confirm size, pressure class, materials, seat design, end connection, actuation and project testing.

Are all floating ball valves the same design?

No. The designs share the same valve family but differ in body construction, service condition or installation purpose. Each important configuration has its own technical product information.

What should I send for a floating ball valve quotation?

Send valve size and quantity, pressure class, body/trim/seat materials, end connection, design pressure and temperature, media, operation, applicable standards, inspection, coating and documentation requirements.
