Double Block and Bleed Valves

Double Block & Bleed Valves combine two isolation barriers with a bleed function in a compact arrangement. Compare integral, double-ball, trunnion, instrument and monoflange configurations below.

Selection Guide

How to choose the right double block and bleed valve design.

Double block and bleed valves can reduce piping components, flange joints and potential leak paths compared with traditional multi-valve arrangements.

Selection is mainly driven by isolation philosophy, line size and pressure, installation space, bleed arrangement and whether the duty is main-line or instrument isolation.

Double Block & Bleed Valve Configurations

Choose by isolation philosophy, size and pressure, installation space and instrument or main-line duty.

01 · Product Type

Integral DBB Ball Valve

An integral DBB ball valve combines the isolation and bleed functions into a single valve body. The design can reduce installed length, flange joints and piping components compared with a conventional arrangement of separate block and bleed valves. Bore, seat direction and bleed connection are defined by the project.

Best suited for: Compact process or pipeline isolation where two blocks and a bleed are integrated into one pressure-containing body.

When to choose it

Choose integral DBB when space, weight and reduction of external joints are the primary objectives.

02 · Product Type

Double Ball DBB Valve

A double ball DBB valve uses two ball closure elements with a bleed cavity between them. The architecture is useful where the owner wants two distinct ball barriers but still wants a compact assembly compared with two separate line valves and a bleed valve.

Best suited for: Isolation duties where two separate ball closures in one assembly provide a clear double-barrier arrangement.

When to choose it

Choose double-ball DBB when the isolation philosophy specifically calls for two separate ball closure elements.

03 · Product Type

Trunnion DBB Ball Valve

A trunnion DBB ball valve applies fixed ball support to a double block and bleed arrangement. It is considered when size, pressure class or operating torque makes a floating DBB architecture less suitable. Seat arrangement, cavity relief and bleed connection must be aligned with the isolation philosophy.

Best suited for: Larger sizes or higher pressure classes where a trunnion-supported DBB arrangement is required.

When to choose it

Choose trunnion DBB when size or pressure requires trunnion support and the project also requires double isolation and bleed.

04 · Product Type

Instrument DBB Valve

An instrument DBB valve is a compact small-bore assembly used between process piping and instruments such as pressure gauges or transmitters. Connection type, bore, vent arrangement, packing and material compatibility should be matched to the instrument hook-up and process media.

Best suited for: Instrument take-off, gauge, transmitter and sampling connections where compact primary/secondary isolation is needed.

When to choose it

Choose instrument DBB when the isolation duty is for small-bore instrument connections rather than the main pipeline.

05 · Product Type

DBB Monoflange Valve

A DBB monoflange valve integrates block, secondary block and bleed functions into a flange-mounted instrument interface. It can reduce fittings and threaded connections between the process flange and instrument. Flange class, outlet connection, material and bleed orientation must match the hook-up drawing.

Best suited for: Flanged instrument connections where DBB functionality must be integrated into a compact flange-mounted body.

When to choose it

Choose a DBB monoflange when the instrument is mounted directly at a process flange and minimizing fittings is important.

FAQ

Double Block & Bleed Valves Selection FAQ

How do I choose between the double block & bleed valves shown on this page?

Start with the application and maintenance strategy. Selection is mainly driven by isolation philosophy, line size and pressure, installation space, bleed arrangement and whether the duty is main-line or instrument isolation. Then confirm size, pressure class, materials, seat design, end connection, actuation and project testing.

Are all double block & bleed valves the same design?

No. The designs share the same valve family but differ in body construction, service condition or installation purpose. Each important configuration has its own technical product information.

What should I send for a double block and bleed valve quotation?

Send valve size and quantity, pressure class, body/trim/seat materials, end connection, design pressure and temperature, media, operation, applicable standards, inspection, coating and documentation requirements.
